National Treasures at Maoling Mausoleum-Twelve Pieces of Huge Stone Sculptures
  01.Hun Invader Hoofed by Warhorse
The sculpture, originally placed before the Tomb of Huo Qubing, has been historically acknowledged as the core among the stone sculptures around the Tomb.
The sculpture represents implied theme of triumph over Hun invaders. It is the monumental masterpiece typical of the subject matter. This piece of work depicts an imposing scene of great disparity in strength between single man and single horse by way of realistic and romantic approaches to express the theme on invincible strength of justice.
The warhorse is sculpted into an image of powerful strength, dignified momentum and impressive appearance, whereas the defeated Hun invader underneath the horse belly bears a hopeless expression of desperate resistance, lying on the back frightened,a bow in the left hand and an arrow in the other, knees bent tight, hair and beard messy. All that imaginatively reflects warm praise for spJendid exploits and noble patriotism of General Huo Qubing but shameful outcome of whoever dare make invasion.
The sculpture, honestly simple in style and highly narrative in imagination, adopts the techniques of circular engraving, relief sculpture and line engraving to treat the theme ingeniously.
  02.Horse Squatting for Action
The sculpture portrays an image of a battle-tested warhorse. The warhorse, whose short mane is trimmed neatly and short ears are pointed, gives an impression of alertness. The head rises as if listening to some sound from afar, ready to prepare for whatever happenings ahead. The horse stretches one fore hoof forward a bit and the tip presses the ground hard, while the other fore hoof lifts a bit but the rear legs are exerting force. This indicates an instant action to rise from squatting posture. This piece of work possesses strong artistic effect of movement in static state and force in action.
The sculpture adopts the technique of three-dimensional circular engraving to express inexhaustible strength in the well-rounded figure. The forceful strokes of long line engraving,in particular, vividly depict the shoulders and the limbs of the horse from energy accumulation to sudden outbreak.
  03.Horse Ready to Leap
The sculpture is an ingenious piece of handiwork,in which the bodily form of a horse well matches with the natural shape of a stone. The chest is chiseled through top and bottom process and the rest parts are shaped by line engraving. The skillful application of chisels vividly portrays the instant action of a horse ready to leap.Such sharp artistic observation and superb techniques win warm praise from countless visitors.
The imposing posture of the horse image reminds people of vast grasslands in the northern China at the ancient times. It impresses people with forging momentum amidst wind howling and horse neighing as if a warrior was determined to go through fire and water at all costs, even sacrifice of life.
The sculpture, bearing smooth lines and clear structure of a horse plus detailed description of its habits, possesses strong sense of movement.
  04.Stone Man
The sculpture possesses an artistic style of romanticism like a cartoon. The proportion exaggerates to such extent that extra sizes are strangely impressed on the head and the right hand. The man, head up to the sky and hand on the chest, looks as if lamenting over something. The widely open eyes look dull with incisors exposed in the grinned mouth. The exaggerated image in such caricature remains a mystery. One of many suppositions refers to helpless expression of surrendered Huns. The sculpture, viewed from an artistic angle, bears peculiar characteristics. It focuses bodily expression on key positions of either extreme succinctness or bold exaggeration as if without any restraint.Yet,a close look into the sculpture finds clear textures in the palm by line engraving. So,deformation without loss of image characteristics stands out most conspicuously.
  05.Man against Bear
The sculpture is a piece of work with strong romanticism to relate the heart-thrilling scene of a man struggling against a bear.Intense atmosphere has traits of humor owing to excessive exaggeration partially.
It is rather dangerous for unarmed human beings to face sudden attacks by wild beasts in remote mountains. The theme expresses danger-ridden situation to insinuate hard-won military exploits against the Hun invaders at Mt.Qilian.
The sculpture almost adopts the technique of relief sculpture by line engraving, which belongs to circular engraving applied to exterior shape of stone.
The stone man of huge build has prominent cheekbones, sunken eyes, high nose and big mouth. The man shrugs shoulders and stretches out the iron hands to fight a life-and-death struggle against a wild bear, which forcibly bites the lower lip of the man in return. The painful expression is exaggerated by the grinned big mouth of the man being bitten. The smaller size of the bear and the exaggerated sculpture of the man constitute a distinct comparison between the two.The superb sculpture skill displays expressiveness of line engraving.
  06.Monster Preying on Sheep
The sculpture is carved in line with the natural shape of stone. It reveals a desperate scene between life and death. The huge monster looks ferocious and greedy. The monster is swallowing up the live sheep, whose one horn at the edge of the monster's mouth. The little sheep is exerting force to resist desperately. The ingenious contrast produces forceful artistic appealing effect to disclose the jungle law of the strong riding roughshod over the weak.
  07.Boar
Thickly forested mountains are the haunt of boars.Naturally, ferocious beasts hide themselves somewhere deep in Mt.Qilian inaccessible to people. The stone sculpture is most likely to bring imagination back to hard battles at Mt.Qilian.It adopts chiseling technique to shape an image of boar on rectangular stones whose faceted surfaces are distinctly joined. The head, though processed in a simple way, conveys lifelike expressions. The triangular sunken eyeholes reflect ferocity and slyness. The protrusive nose touching the ground indicates the motive of keeping watch to prepare for surprise attacks. The spine of the boar is chiseled extremely sharp to present the tough bristles and tenacious texture of the skin. The artistic style gives an impression of brightness and roughness in an accurate but concise way to make the whole structure coordinately proportionate and vividly lifelike.
  08.Tiger Squatting for Action
One saying goes that General Li Guang of the Han Dynasty once mistook a stone tiger for a real one.He hurriedly shot an arrow, which went directly into the stone. However, the sculpture is so genuine that it can well be taken as a perfect copy if placed amidst thick grass.
The sculpture presents an image of an alert ferocious tiger waiting for an opportune moment to catch its prey. The skin around the neck is tightened and the limbs are powerful. The long tail is curled on the back, which adds its aggressiveness all the more. The head is vividly engraved. The sculpted stripes throughout the body by line engraving along natural textures of the stone convey plumpness, fullness and robustness of a tiger.
  09.Ox Squatting at Leisure
Cattle and sheep grazing on pastures are not exposed until grass is blown Iow.The popular saying in China implies to convey peace, prosperity and affluence enjoyed by people. All that attributed to Huo Qubing, whose army ruthlessly beat back the invasion by the Huns into the northwestern China. The sculpture, from one side, praised the army's brilliant victory at Mt.Qilian and the hard-won military exploits.
The sculpture focuses expression on characters of an ox.The hoofs and horns are properly exaggerated to display the characters of sturdiness and strength.Meanwhile, proportion of the forehead is somewhat widened.Expression of tameness is made felt by the head and the mouth.Loose wrinkles down the neck are carved all the more vivid and true to life to represent rumination after a square meal. The stirrup and the saddle on the back tell that the ox is used to carry burdens.
Sculptors applied continuous parallel engraving to the sculpture so that those loose wrinkles down the neck look as if they were wriggling rhythmically.
  10.Elephant Squatting at Leisure
The sculpture takes the posture of lying at leisure. The trunk rests on one of its front feet. The sculpture portrays the sweet cuteness of the elephant. The approach to the sculpture is ingeniously unique and appeals pleasantly to eyes.
The sculpture adopts the technique of simple engraving to carve tiny circles representing two eyes and curved lines representing auricles. All that helps to express meek impression,in addition to liveliness and cunning.
The sculpture is so perfectly done that as a whole,it looks true to life both bodily and spiritually.
  11.Frog
The sculpture looks like a piece of ordinary stone at the first glance.Yet,a close look finds that it turns out to become an ingenious resemblance to a stone frog, which shapes its body to flat outline of the stone, except for the characteristic parts exquisitely carved -a couple of eyes popped out and the little open mouth. The bottom color of the stone is much like the naturally protective coloration of a frog. The imaginative image of a frog is implicitly expressed by the sculpture.
  12.Toad
The sculpture is carved on the basis of a stone whose shape and color resemble those of a toad.It looks very much like a squatting toad. The eyes, nose and mouth are carved true to life. Moreover, the toad has a row of sharp teeth. The forelegs and hindquarters are carved in a simple way to give a vague impression.Looked from the sides, the sculpture is outlined as a toad that poses an action to jump.
  Huge Stone Sculptures
  13.Stone Fish
The two sculptures imitative of fish use two square long stones, one end of each of which is carved into the head, eyes, mouth as well as the fin.The rectangular stone serves as a substitute for the fish body.It has no tail.Maybe,it was used as something for decoration.Analysis reveals that they might be used as‘seat'to sustain weight at the ancient times.
14.Inscribed Characters of Memorial:‘Zuo Si Kong’
(1)The immensely oval stone bears the three carved characters‘zuo si kong’(referring to engineering institution exercising administration over craftsmen)on the right top in forceful strokes. The characters of memorial may have suggested the characters engraved on the stone by a craftsman under the government administration of‘Zuo Si Kong’.From this, the sculptures at the Maoling Mausoleum may have mostly been done by such craftsmen.
As is revealed in The Annals of Han History, government officials assuming the post of‘Zuo Si Kong’or‘You Si Kong’are held responsible for making eaves tiles and tiles. That is similar to the Qin Dynasty(221-206 B.C.).
The characters‘Zuo Si Kong’and‘You Si Kong’referred to engineering institutions exercising administration over craftsmen engaged to make tiles and bricks as well as carve sculptures during the period when Wudi of the Han reigned.
